Best trading journal for futures traders

Futures traders have two needs most journals handle badly: contracts sized as contracts (not shares or lots), and the trailing drawdown that Topstep, Apex and similar futures firms use. Here is how six journals handle both, checked on their own sites in October 2026.

What a futures journal has to get right

  • Contract sizing. P&L per tick, per contract, with micro and mini contracts kept straight. A journal that treats ES like a stock misreports every trade.
  • Trailing drawdown. Futures firms lean on trailing floors that move with your high-water mark, sometimes intraday including open P&L, sometimes end-of-day, sometimes locking at a threshold. Which one applies decides how much room you have at 8:30.
  • Platform import. Tradovate, Rithmic, NinjaTrader, Sierra Chart and CQG are the common sources. Auto-sync or at least a clean CSV path matters.
  • News. Index and energy futures move hardest on scheduled releases, and futures firms publish restrictions around them.

The six, in order for a funded futures trader

1. TradesViz

For futures specifically, TradesViz edges Proof because of auto-sync. It lists one-click continuous sync from Tradovate, Rithmic and NinjaTrader, plus Sierra Chart and CQG, and it names Apex and Topstep among 37+ firm profiles. Drawdown is tracked in four types, including trailing intraday and trailing-to-static lock, which is exactly the Apex and Topstep pattern. Challenge Mode runs an evaluation inside its simulator. Pro is $19.99 a month or $14.99 billed yearly. The gaps: news windows are recorded but not yet enforced (June 2026 post), and there is no projected payout date. Prices change.

2. Proof

Proof sizes every market in its own units, so contracts are contracts and the position sizer works in ticks. Topstep and Apex presets are included alongside the forex firms, with trailing drawdown tracked in high-water, equity, end-of-day and locking variants. Risk Guard shows live room to today's limit and to the trailing floor. News windows are applied per firm from several top sources combined plus the firm's list, and energy reports are included for oil and gas traders. Target projects the payout date from the firm's schedule. Vera, the AI coach, is included with 500 credits a month. The gap is import: no auto-sync, so trades come in by CSV from your platform. $49 a month, $399 a year or $499 lifetime at special pricing, 7-day refund.

3. TraderSync

700+ brokers and platforms with auto-sync on every plan, and futures and futures options are supported on all plans. Market replay runs at 1-minute, 1-second or 250-millisecond precision by tier, which futures scalpers will appreciate. Nothing on its site about prop firm drawdown or news rules. List prices $29.95, $49.95 and $79.95 a month, discounted in October 2026.

4. TradeZella

Tradovate and NinjaTrader are named among its 500+ integrations, and Prop Firm Sync names Apex and Topstep with profit target, daily drawdown and consistency tracking. Trailing drawdown variants are not described on its pages. Backtesting with tick data and a large community are the draws. Essential is $35 a month for one account; multi-account starts at Pro, $59.

5. Edgewonk

Futures and indices are supported, discipline tools are the best here, and one plan is $197 a year for unlimited accounts. No firm presets, no news calendar, no auto-sync stated.

6. Tradervue

Futures and futures options are supported with broker import, 300+ reports on Gold ($49 a month) and a free plan up to 30 trades a month. No prop firm or news features.

Choosing between the top two

If your trades sit in Tradovate or Rithmic and you want them to appear in the journal without a file, TradesViz is the practical pick and cheaper. If you want the news windows applied rather than noted, a payout date rather than a readiness flag, a dollar figure on every rule break, and a daily routine that runs the session, Proof is the pick and you will import a CSV at the end of the day.

Either way, confirm the firm's own drawdown definition first. The Topstep and Apex rule pages cover what each enforces, and the drawdown calculator shows your room before the open.
