How prop firm drawdown rules actually work
Every firm has two loss limits, and they’re measured differently. The daily loss limit resets every day and is measured from a reference point the firm chooses: the starting balance, yesterday’s closing balance, or the higher of balance and equity at the reset. The max loss (also called max drawdown or trailing drawdown) is the floor under the whole account.
The part that breaches people is how the floor moves. A fixed floor never moves. A trailing floor rises as you make new highs, so profit you give back can breach you even when the account is above its starting balance. Most instant-funded accounts trail your high-water mark and lock once the floor reaches the starting balance. Some trail equity, which means open profit you never banked still lifts the floor. Futures firms usually trail the end-of-day balance.
What this calculator does
- Loads the firm’s rule type for daily loss and max loss, from the firm’s published rules.
- Works out today’s daily loss floor and your max loss floor in dollars.
- Shows the room you have left to each one, counting open P&L, since floating losses count at most firms.
- Tells you whether the floor has locked and what it would take to lock it.
Examples on a $50,000 account
- FXIFY Instant Funding: 8% daily loss from the previous day’s balance, 8% max loss trailing the highest balance until it locks at $50,000. A high of $52,000 puts the floor at $48,000. Reach $54,000 and it locks at $50,000.
- FundingPips Instant Funded: 3% daily loss from the higher of balance or equity at the reset, 5% max loss trailing the highest equity, locking at $50,000 once you’re up 5%. Open losses can’t exceed 1% at any moment.
- Topstep Trading Combine: no daily loss limit unless you add one. A $2,000 Maximum Loss Limit trails the end-of-day balance and locks at the starting balance.
How to use the number
The room to your daily floor is the most you can lose today across every open trade on that account. Size each trade so that all stops together stay well inside it. Most funded traders keep total open risk at or under 1% of the account, and under the firm’s own open-risk cap where one exists.
The room to your max loss floor is your runway. When it gets under about three times your usual risk per trade, cut size until you’ve rebuilt it.
Proof does this for every account, live, every day
Risk Guard shows your room to each floor for every account on one screen, updates as trades close, and sizes each trade inside your limits. Challenge HQ keeps every account’s floors, targets and payout eligibility together.

What is the difference between daily loss and max drawdown?
The daily loss limit resets each day and measures today’s loss from a daily reference point. Max drawdown is the floor under the whole account, measured from the starting balance or from your highest point if it trails.
Does open P&L count toward the daily loss limit?
At most firms, yes. Floating losses count in real time, so a trade that is down but still open can breach the limit before you close it. The calculator includes open P&L for that reason.
What does it mean when a trailing drawdown locks?
Once the floor rises to the starting balance it stops moving. From then on the account behaves like a fixed-floor account at breakeven. Most instant-funded accounts lock there; some, like Goat Funded’s HERO, never lock.
Why does my firm’s dashboard show a different number?
Firms differ on timing (daily reset hour), rounding, whether commissions count, and whether the floor updates intraday or at end of day. This calculator follows each firm’s published rule but your dashboard is the final word.
Can I use this for a firm that isn’t listed?
Yes. Pick Custom firm, enter the daily loss and max loss percentages, and choose how the max loss floor moves.
